SOULCYCLE TEAM WEEKEND 'BEHIND THE SCENES' REPORT
"Strengthen the team feeling, having a nice time together and filming a sick BMX video".
It’s Friday evening the 10th of May. The boys from the Soulcycle team are gathering in ‘the warehouse’. The warehouse or more known among the general public as Rock ‘N Roll BMX distribution, is the distro of the Amsterdam-based Soulcycle. It’s also the supplier of a lot of BMX stores all over Europe. I arrive as one of the last. Everyone is having conversations, drinking beers and eating microwave lasagna.
The warehouse seems to be more than a very bright space with high shelves filled with BMX parts. There are ramps and there is a cozy hangout with sofas, turntables and a bar. Emile, Soulcycle’s team manager, organized a team weekend. The kick-off is about to happen right now. The meaning of this weekend? “Strengthen the team feeling, having a nice time together and filming a sick BMX video”, Emile says. Also there will be the release of the brand new Soulcycle clothing collection and the team will be joined by a new, fanatic rider from Belgium, Stijn Hens!

Saturday afternoon. Because of my job I can’t join the team at this moment, but apparently the boys are outside in the evening too. Anne, one of Soulcycle’s team riders, calls me. He asks me enthusiastic about my plan for tonight: “Hanging out with the Soulcycle boys, right?” And that’s actually my plan. The weather is still great and allows us to still ride our bikes and chill a bit at the Marnix bowl. Also Koen, the owner of Soulcycle, joins us. I give him a 8,6% beer. ‘The higher your status, the stronger the beer.’ Which means I am sipping a 5,0%, of course.

The hours in the evening are filled in with stories from team rider Sem Kok, who recently went to Australia without any money. Also Emile has a lot to tell. Sem and Emile just went to Florida two weeks ago to represent Soulcycle at the Swampfest BMX Jam. The other guys, Joeri, Stijn and Anne having a lot to say either. Everything is actually related to BMX, that’s just what these boys breathe.

Sunday, the last day of the team weekend. And as the name of this day gives away: it’s a nice sunny day which makes it perfect for riding and filming. We arrive at a new spot nearby Amsterdam-Zuid station. Jackets pulled out, bags got unpacked. The old school Sony VX cameras, which still work with cassettes, are getting prepared. The boys wanting to have a nice crispy video quality and these cams are absolutely made to get that result.
Sippin' cola with team rider Sem Kok all day.
After a few minutes Sem and Emile already flying around. No Handers, Turndowns, you name it. The VX cams are focused on them. Also Stijn and Joeri are not hesitating to shred around. They land trick after trick. Soulcycle’s new acquisition suddenly sees a massive handrail. He and Jack go for it. They ‘tame’ this rail, like Jack says. And with that we leave this spot.
Team riders Anne Hofsink and Joeri Veul.
Joeri is besides a good technical rider also a fanatic spot searcher. He leads us to a parking lot of a hotel. Barely one minute after arrival the Belgian newcomer sees a serious obstacle again. He takes a huge run-up. 50 metres or so. Unfortunately traffic on the motorway hinders, but he keeps trying. With moist hands I behold this scene.
Stijn Hens and Emile Bouwman celebrating Stijn's "gap to ice".
Then after half an hour it’s done. He steals the show. He lands his trick. A lot of cheers and hugs for the hero of the day. After the euphoria decreases the Soulcycle boys all agree to end the Soulcycle team weekend here at his peak. And after a nice and productive team weekend I realize our ways separate right here.
